Which Animals Are Best For Hunting?

As is the case with most homesteaders, hunting has become a regular activity in our household. It’s one of my husbands’ favourite pastimes and it is something I enjoy as well. I appreciate that some people may see it as a violent and unnecessary practice, but we view it as a way to provide for our family and connect with nature. But when it comes to choosing which animals to hunt, it’s important to consider a variety of factors. Here are my thoughts on the matter!

Big Game: A Challenge Worth Pursuing

There’s something about hunting big game that really gets the blood pumping. Whether it’s tracking a majestic deer through the forest or setting your sights on a massive elk, the thrill of the hunt is hard to beat. Plus, let’s be honest, there’s nothing more satisfying than bringing home a big, juicy slab of venison to cook up for dinner.

That being said, big game hunting isn’t for the faint of heart. It requires a certain level of skill and experience to take down these beasts, not to mention a hefty investment in equipment. But for those who are up for the challenge, the rewards can be well worth it.

Small Game: An Easy Target

If you’re looking for a more low-key hunting experience, small game might be the way to go. Squirrels, rabbits, and other small critters are plentiful in many parts of the country, making them an easy target for hunters of all skill levels. Plus, they’re often easier to prepare and cook than larger animals, making them a great option for those who are new to hunting.

Of course, there are downsides to small game hunting as well. The meat yield is typically much lower than with big game, meaning you’ll need to bag several animals to make a decent meal. And while some may view it as a less ethical form of hunting, there’s no denying that small game can provide a great opportunity for new hunters to hone their skills.

Predators: The Ultimate Challenge

For those who truly want to test their mettle, predator hunting can be an exhilarating experience. Coyotes, bobcats, and even mountain lions are all fair game (no pun intended) in many parts of the country. These animals are cunning, elusive, and incredibly dangerous, making them the ultimate challenge for even the most experienced hunters.

But as with all forms of hunting, there are risks involved. Predator hunting requires a certain level of skill and knowledge, as these animals are much harder to track and take down than other game. Plus, there’s always the risk of encountering a predator that’s bigger, stronger, or smarter than you are. But for those who are up for the challenge, predator hunting can provide a level of excitement and adrenaline that’s hard to find anywhere else.

If you are completely new to hunting, then I would suggest easing yourself first. It’s not sensible to dive straight into the deep end as you’ll probably find you’ll be unsuccessful. Instead, take time to build up your skills. But first, you’ll need to invest in some quality equipment, including a firearm, ammunition, and hunting gear. Then, you’ll need to study up on local laws and regulations, as well as the specific habits and behaviors of the animals you plan to hunt. And don’t forget about safety – hunting can be dangerous, so you’ll need to take all necessary precautions to protect yourself and others. But hey, if you’re willing to put in the work, hunting can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience.

In terms of the best firearm to use… I’m afraid there’s no easy answer to that one! The best gun for hunting will depend on a variety of factors, including the type of animal you’re hunting, the terrain you’ll be hunting in, and your personal preferences as a shooter. Some hunters swear by rifles, while others prefer shotguns or even bows and arrows. And of course, there are endless options when it comes to brands, calibers, and styles of gun. So, my advice? Do your research, try out a few different options, and find what works best for you.

At the end of the day, the best animal to hunt is ultimately a matter of personal preference. Whether you’re looking for a challenging experience or simply want to put food on the table, there’s an animal out there that will fit the bill. But no matter what you decide to hunt, it’s important to do so ethically and responsibly. Respect the animals you’re hunting, follow all laws and regulations, and always prioritize safety above all else. Happy hunting!
